In the book of Romans, the Apostle Paul encouraged the church in Rome to welcome one another. Romans 15:7 (ESV) Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. On behalf of our church family, we'd like to extend a special welcome to our visitors today.  Our hope and prayer for visitors and regular attendees today is that our interactions here today will, indeed, bring glory to God.

What is Pentecost?

Pentecost, also called Whitsunday, (Pentecost from Greek pentecostē, “50th day”), is a major festival in the Christian church, celebrated on the Sunday that falls on the 50th day of Easter. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and other disciples following the Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus Christ (Acts of the Apostles, chapter 2), and it marks the beginning of the Christian church’s mission to the world.

The Jewish feast of Pentecost (Shavuot) was primarily a thanksgiving for the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, but it was later associated with a remembrance of the Law given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai. The church’s transformation of the Jewish feast to a Christian festival was thus related to the belief that the gift of the Holy Spirit to the followers of Jesus was the firstfruits of a new dispensation that fulfilled and succeeded the old dispensation of the Law.

Forward Day by Day Meditation

2 Corinthians 4:17. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure.

In the second grade, my parents gave me a scooter. It was big and red, with inflated rubber tires that could fly down the steep hill in our neighborhood. It was a challenge to get back up the hill, but I hardly noticed because I was so enamored with my special gift.

I’ve always been mesmerized by the phrase “eternal weight of glory.” How does one weigh glory? How can glory be heavy? Isn’t a heavy load a bad thing? Isn’t the eschaton about having our burdens removed?

The weight of glory could be like my scooter. Perhaps the joy of the gift raises us up to the task of carrying its weight. Maybe our resurrected bodies enjoy the feeling of the weight, like a powerlifter hitting a sweet spot. Maybe the new earth will be less about the removal of loads and more about the transformation of what we carry into wonderful things, and the transformation of us into people who are capable of bearing them—and delight in doing so.

MOVING FORWARD: What does the phrase “weight of glory” mean to you?
